Putting my money into a kiosk, paying my night parking tickets at the Riverwest police station, a middle-aged, father-type black man with a fisherman's hat entered through glass doors and approached an officer. I can't speak in favor of his argument, not knowing the situation, but assertively he described the poor treatment his family had been subjected to by the local police, and demanded reprimand. With his finger waving above the desk, he pointed out specific officers as they passed by, telling the desk clerk she had to "keep an eye on them." I left inspired. Whether he's talking horse shit or not, witnessing that type of resistant-consciousness towards power in a deeply impoverished, predominantly black-latino neighborhood rules, and brings us one step closer to a free society.

In response to tonight's abrupt ending, I feel compelled to add, for those who were there, greater clarity to the situation.

While the experience of being cut-off midset is degrading, and hurtful, regardless of the circumstance, I do accept, and understand why it happened, and blame no one. Jake seems pretty rad.

Although, I'd like to share, because, in between being cut off, and explaining on stage without a microphone, the content of my message was almost inevitably lost. The verse read as:

"That's conformity to pray to a god your parents told you to.
That's hypocrisy to wage war based on religious values.
That's discrimination to claim to love gays, yet, hate what they do in their private lives.
That's insanity, to take The Bible's word, as something it was never meant to.
But, regardless, someday, we're all going to look out that window, and in unison, sing,

The doctrine expressed within religious text, is often abused by a small minority to serve as a foundation to justify discriminating practices, or hatred, throughout the world. I recognize this dogmatic, anti-love/compassion perspective manifest itself in nearly every corner I turn, against almost every group of people I know of. It kills me, and I will not accept it. These words were words of love, and were meant to recognize certain elements of main-stream faith (not JUST Christianity, but, Islam, Judaism as well) which inhibit freedom, taint the passionate meaning and purpose of religion, and wrong the names of all its saviors, and martyrs, prophets, and gods.

Last Weekened (da 9th && 1oth, o9) Arto had its first few shows in Madison. They were delightful!

on Friday we played a show at Der Rathskeller, a bar located in The Memorial Union aka big college building. we opened for Drew Danburry && Someone Still Love You Boirs Yeltsin. Many friends came from out of town to see the show && at the same time many new freinds it was their first. We played well. Sadley at the end i blew up me bass amp.

on Saturday Arto opened at a basment part/kegger/cdsplitrelease show. The split release was that of Pushmi-Pullyu & The Enright House!! two fAB BANDS. Check out The Enrights web/blog for more fun facts on the night.

After listening to Beyonce, The Beatles, Pink Floyd, and Chris Brown day in and day out, sometimes the urge for a change takes hold. Although we constantly revere our favorite musicians, sometimes we find ourselves taking a break and looking for something new. Perhaps the local band Arto is exactly what we're looking for.
The band consists of three members: Cassidy J. David-Weber, East alumni Myles Coyne, and our very own Jamie Yanda, a senior this year. The word "arto" is a Latin term meaning "to unite" or "to [abridge]." The band's CD, which was released last summer, compliments its title as its content bridges different genres of music together to create a unique sound.
Arto's music is a mixture of folk, noise, and electronics combined with a passionate and soulful narrative. With the aid of many friends playing guest instruments, the songs not only make use of the standard bass, drums, piano, and voice, but also include gongs, xylophones, radio frequencies, broken harps, drum circles, loon calls, horns, and more.
As band member Yanda puts it, "all that surrounds you and me has the potential to be made a musical instrument."
The songs on the album, including "There Will Be Blood," "Sah," "The Language of Animals," and Y and's personal favorite "Samsa's Compassion," were inspired by "people who live passionately, wildly, and dangerously."
Arto's music conveys the following message: "Remove your luster of social responsibility. Far too many people are owned by far too many things. Do it yourself. Do what you want, when you want. Your Humanness is your highest authority."
Arto relieves listeners of the mundane sound found on the average iPod and provides a unique, passionate, and powerful blend of music. With the talent that the album contains, who knows? Someday Ato's name may be printed in a newspaper bigger than this one.

I'm kicking my school's ass so far. Aside from round two of Alg II, I have strictly The Humanities. It's wonderful! Aside from that, I wanna start rocking again and seeing my band mates on a regular basis. We're all (including Kato) hanging out on the 13th in Milwaukee. Lookin' at some houses!

The final night hanging out on the way to Cassidy's house to drop him off the fog ignited a light of an on coming car's headlights. I'd never seen anything like it but it kinda felt like a sign. You know, like something's trying to say, "everything is going to be alright."

Revitalize The Song

Music will run forever. As does the river, which swims upon itself in an eternal backstroke, yes, Music will run forever. And no matter how concerned we are for its survival it does not need anyone. If no hand is left to the aged sheepskin of a drum, the songbird will remain. If the songbird's voice has lost itself somewhere, the deep warble of the sea will keep eternity's metronome. And when all disappears, and only the deep unflinching presence of space, endless and haunting, exists and dominates, the musical rests of silence will hang in every particle of nothing.
This was intended to be a reminder, yet when I reflect upon what I've seen, it seems this message has already manifested itself. As if torturing an animal that will never die, we continually torture music. This is no dissent toward any particular genre, or musician, but as a whole, music has been bed-ridden. There are sores along its legs. It can't get up to go to the bathroom so it stays stationary, playing the same tune, defecating upon itself over and over, weeping and clawing into the air. You can hear a frothy tremolo from the hallway.
If we were ever concerned, those concerns have transfigured themselves into a tolerance. Yes, a tolerance to bullshit. We've grown to accept many things. We accept the empty noise pollution of boxcars and automobiles. We accept a perpetual blast of war violence through our TV sets. We accept loneliness, and disappointment, illness, and loss. It is okay to accept certain facts of life, yet we cannot allow music to enter this chasm.
Its unending presence, its courage and determination should be celebrated! The endurance of Music should be laid upon a golden arch, which will be our sincerity, and creativity! Our souls should flow and be everywhere about Music, and cover it with their warmth. We gotta end the bullshit; we have to pour our blood into the vessels of our songs! Whether acoustic or electric, analog, or digital, by God, write yourself into your art! Beamers and ice will not keep you alive, and neither will mass public approval. It is ourselves and only ourselves we must write for, and no one else. Feel electric! Feel alive! Music will live forever, thus its agony will too, so an end to the pain must come, and it can only come from us: Music's eternal backstroke.

Today at 7:15 am and 8:50 am artos sax players Elisabeth & Stephanie boarded their planes and headed back to their home countries (Stef= Brazil and E-liz to Germany). They are both very much loved and their absence in the arto family brings tears to all of our eyes and a sigh to the songs. There may be replacement members but NO ONE will be the same as these two gals. the original family is broken. "The fox is found. The star goes black! There is love!" But we will not forget them and shall soon meet again. we love you Stephanie and Elisabeth. We love you!!

Thank you all for coming to our cd release show last night. I've heard our album probably 200 times now and pretty much never want to hear it again, regardless, we are grateful you put forth 8 greenbacks and took it back home with you. In fact, if you didn't have any money with you or weren't able to make the show, you can pick up the record at the Green Bay Exclusive Company. It's been a long time coming and we hope you enjoy and take something from it.
I am pleased with our performance even counting the mistakes. Music is a human creation thus, mistakes will forever exist within it. Thank you They Leave Messages for putting on an excellent performance and especially Tom for learning every drum part the day before the show. No thanks to the assholes who abused the audience with their foul, beastly humor.
Our ideas and feelings are capsulated within our lyrical content and seeing as it is not included in the album sleeve, we will include it here.
